Venice After Dark

There are moments when Venice seems to belong to someone else.

During the day, the city is crossed by thousands of people. The narrow streets fill with visitors, bridges become busy passageways, and every corner seems to have already been photographed. Then night arrives.

The voices become quieter. Windows begin to glow. The water reflects the few remaining lights, and the narrow streets become darker, quieter and more mysterious. This is the Venice I want to photograph.

This is the idea behind Venice After Dark, a private night portrait experience created for people who want to experience Venice differently — and allow themselves to be surprised.

This is not a typical photo shoot

I don’t want this to be another typical photography session in Venice. No list of famous landmarks to visit. No posing in front of the same monuments. No phone constantly in your hand, checking a map or trying to understand where we are going.

For around 90 minutes, your phone stays away. And Venice becomes our only reference. The experience is designed for one or two people maximum. A couple, two friends, or someone who simply wants to experience something different.

We meet at a specific point in Venice. From that moment, you won’t know exactly where we are going. And that is part of the experience.

Follow without knowing

One of the ideas I love most is not knowing the route in advance. Venice is a city made for getting lost. A narrow calle suddenly turns towards a canal. A small bridge leads to a quiet square you have never seen before. A single illuminated doorway breaks the darkness. A reflection on the water completely changes the atmosphere.

During Venice After Dark, I don’t simply want to take you to a beautiful location. I want to guide you through a side of Venice that you probably wouldn’t search for yourself.

For this reason, the route and locations are intentionally kept private. Not to create an artificial mystery, but because part of the experience is not knowing what is waiting around the next corner.

At the end of the evening, I simply ask you not to publicly share the exact route or locations. Some places are better when they remain a secret.

Without your phone

We are used to photographing everything. We arrive somewhere and, before really looking at it, we take a picture. With Venice After Dark, I want to try something different. For once, you don’t have to photograph Venice.

Tonight, there is no need to photograph Venice. Just walk, look around, and let the city unfold. Listen to your footsteps on the stone.

Watch the lights reflected in the canals. Feel how the city changes when it becomes quieter. I will have the camera. You won’t. And perhaps because of that, you will notice things you would normally miss.

The light of the night

The photographs will be created with the light we find along the way. Warm street lamps. Illuminated windows. Reflections on the water. Deep shadows. Stone, brick and walls marked by centuries of weather and time. And, when needed, a carefully controlled flash.

I am particularly interested in the contrast between the existing light of Venice and the artificial light I can create. The result should not look like a tourist photograph. I want it to feel cinematic. Almost like a frame from a film.

A face appearing from the darkness. A couple kissing in a quiet calle. Someone crossing a bridge while Venice disappears into the shadows behind them. Light reflected on black water.

And perhaps, for part of the journey, the water

There is another possibility that can make the experience even more special. On selected evenings, the route may include a short boat transfer. I don’t want Venice After Dark to become a boat tour.

The boat is not the destination. It is the passage. A way to change perspective, cross Venice at night and reach another part of the city. For a few minutes there are no narrow streets, no bridges and no footsteps.

Only the water. The illuminated façades. The darkness of the lagoon. Then we step back onto land and continue into a calle you may never have seen before.

The photographs come afterwards

During the 90 minutes, I don’t want to interrupt the experience by constantly showing you the photographs.

I don’t want you checking the camera screen after every shot. I want the evening to remain a story. The photographs come afterwards. A small collection of images that tells the story of what happened. They won’t be only portraits. They will be fragments of the night.

Two people finding each other in the darkness. A Venice that, the next day, may almost feel unreal.

A Venice you cannot find on a map

This, in the end, is what I want to create with Venice After Dark. Not another way of visiting Venice. But another way of feeling it. There is the Venice everyone knows. And then there is the Venice that appears when the streets become empty.

Quieter. More intimate. Sometimes darker. A city that doesn’t need to be explained. You simply have to follow it. And let yourself be photographed.

How long does the experience last?
Around 90 minutes.

How many people can take part?
One or two people. I deliberately keep the group very small so the experience remains personal and I can give my full attention to the people I photograph.

Will we know where we are going?
No. You will receive the meeting point in advance, while the route and locations remain intentionally private.

Why can’t I use my phone?
Because this experience is also about seeing Venice without constantly photographing it. For 90 minutes, the camera will be in my hands.

Will there be a boat?
When included in the route, part of the experience may take place on the water. The boat is not the focus of the experience, but a way to cross the city at night and reach different locations.

When will I receive the photographs?
After the session, I will personally select and edit the images and prepare a small gallery that tells the story of your night in Venice.
